Man accused in string of armed robberies arrested

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- A man who is accused of committing five armed robberies between February 1 and February 8, 2020 has been charged with five counts of armed robbery, according to court documents.

John Wigfall was charged on February 10.

On February 1, a suspect entered the Family Dollar in the 2400 block of Lincolnway West around 9:30 p.m., stood in line, then pointed a gun at the clerk and demanded cash from the register. The clerk estimated he gave the suspect, later identified as Wigfall, $514 in cash.

The suspect fled in a waiting vehicle, reports said.

On February 4, around 9:43 p.m., police responded to the Walgreens on Ireland Road to investigate an armed robbery, reports said.

The victim told police a man entered the store, approached the register and pulled a handgun out of his pocket, reports said.

Wigfall allegedly pointed the gun at the employee and demanded cash from the register, according to the probable cause affidavit.

The clerk told police the suspect was given approximately $166 and he fled the store.

On February 6 at 8 p.m., a man entered the Dollar General in the 3700 block of Lincolnway West, selected a bag of Doritos, stood in line, then approached the register and pulled a gun out of his coat pocket, according to the probable cause affidavit.

Wigfall allegedly pointed the gun at the clerk and demanded money from the cash register, reports said.

After receiving approximately $200, Wigfall fled the store, reports said.

On February 7 around 9:30 p.m., police were dispatched to Romantix in the 2700 block of S. Main to investigate an armed robbery.

The victim and witnesses told police the suspect entered the store, approached the register, pulled out a gun and demanded money from the register, according to the probable cause affidavit.

The victim gave the suspect approximately $238 from the register, reports said.

The suspect fled in a white Ford Explorer, reports said.

On February 8 around 4:14 a.m., police responded to the Walgreens in the 1000 block of Ireland Road to investigate an armed robbery.

The witness said the suspect came into the store, approached the register, pulled a gun from his coat and demanded cash, reports said.

He left with approximately $300 in cash and fled in a white Ford Explorer, according to the probable cause affidavit.

Investigators say on February 7, a woman contacted them and said John Wigfall was responsible for the robberies at the Walgreens on February 1 and Family Dollar on February 4. She told police she was in the Ford Explorer, waiting outside while he committed the robberies, according to the probable cause affidavit.

The woman told police who the Ford Explorer belonged to, reports said.

The following day, February 8, officers were called to an armed robbery at the Walgreens on Ireland Road. Police went to the home of the person who owned the Ford Explorer, reports said.

The vehicle was at the home and was still warm, reports said.

After obtaining a search warrant for the home, officers located Wigfall, a small black air gun and over $700 in cash, reports said.

Wigfall admitted to committing all five armed robberies, according to the probable cause affidavit.
