Man accused of beating ex-girlfriend with a bat

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- A man is accused of beating his ex-girlfriend with a bat when he went to pick up his belongings, according to court records.

On July 12, the victim invited Lamont Bennett, her ex-boyfriend, to her apartment to pick up his belongings. She said it had been almost a year and thought it would be safe to do so, reports said.

When Bennett went inside the apartment, the victim said the situation escalated, reports said.

Bennett saw two baseball bats, picked them up, and chased the victim into the bedroom, according to the probable cause affidavit.

The victim told police she was on her bed and every time she tried to leave, Bennett hit her with the bat, reports said.

He took her phone so she couldn't call police, reports said.

Bennett eventually left her room, so she snuck out of her apartment. After a short time, she went to a neighbor's apartment and called police.

The victim was taken to the hospital for treatment of a dislocated thumb, fracture on her right hand, stitches on her left leg and swelling and bruising, reports said.

Three days later, the victim reported Bennett was in a vehicle in the alley behind her home. She told police she was concerned he will kill her, according to the probable cause affidavit.

Police attempted to contact Bennett, but his phone was not accepting calls.

Bennett was charged in September 22 with criminal confinement while armed with a deadly weapon, criminal confinement resulting in serious bodily injury, domestic battery by means of a deadly weapon, domestic battery resulting in serious bodily injury and interference with reporting a crime.

Bennett was arrested on October 12.
