MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. -- A man is now charged following a stabbing on Monday night, when the victim was approached while walking his dogs.

The Michigan City Police Department says officers were called to the area of 8th and Washington Streets by a witness around 7:30 p.m.

Court documents show the victim was walking his dogs on a path near the South Shore Line train station on 11th Street. He noticed three people walking towards him down the path. He lost sight of them before the group appeared again, with one man quickly approaching him.

The suspect, later identified as 43-year-old Bertrell Randle, claimed the man's dogs had bit him. The victim says he told Randle to go away and put out his arm to push Randle away. Randle then allegedly punched him and knocked him to the ground where he continued to punch the victim.

Another man who was also walking his dog reportedly witnessed the incident before stepping in to pull Randle off of the victim. Randle then continued walking north on Franklin Street. After the victim stood up, he says he noticed he was bleeding badly but later told police he didn't know at which point he was stabbed.

Once officers responded to the scene, they found blood stains but not the victim. They then spoke with the witness who called 9-1-1. The witness said he was driving when he saw the victim stumbling across the road. He asked the witness to take him to the hospital, but after entering the vehicle, asked for an ambulance instead. After paramedics arrived, the victim was airlifted to the hospital.

The witness then shared a photo with police of Randle and another man that was taken at some point during the incident, identifying Randle as a suspect. At some point that night, officers located the two men and brought them to the Michigan City Police Department.

While speaking to detectives at the police department, Randle said he reached down to pet the victim's dogs and then their owner punched him in the face. Randle said his friend pulled him up and told him not to fight before Randle ran.

Police later obtained surveillance video from several businesses in the area. The video captured the victim walking with his dogs when Randle began yelling in his direction. The victim turned around but then continued walking. Several minutes later, Randle was allegedly seen following the victim while holding a knife at his side. Randle then appears to grab the victim from behind before Randle is punched two times. As the victim backs away, Randle is seen striking him several times, before the two separate.

Randle is now charged with Attempted Murder, a Level One Felony, and Aggravated Battery, a Level Three Felony.
