Former SBFD captain Stewart Russell sentenced after sex crime convictions

Oakland County Jail OAKLAND COUNTY, Mich. -- A former South Bend Fire Department captain could spend over three decades in prison after two sex crime convictions.
Stewart Russell was sentenced for the following charges the morning of September 1:
- First Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct: 15 years to 35 years, credit 127 days
- Second Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct: 71 months to 15 years, credit 127 days
Russell first joined the department in November 1981; he retired as Captain in January 2025.
