NOW: Irish fall to cougars in instant classic

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- 28-24. Notre Dame breaks the longest winning streak in college football tonight here in Provo. A very hostile environment. Boubacar Traore Defensive coordinator Chris Ash said he didn't think this offense was going to try anything fancy, but fancy is exactly what we saw. BYU basically pulled out all the tricks in their playbook, and Notre Dame defense had some trouble with the answers. They nearly pulled off a comeback in Provo, but BYU had the final say. Things got off to a rough start. Boubacar Traore was ejected for targeting on the opening drive, and BYU took a 21-10 lead into halftime. The Irish had a chance to cut that deficit before the break, but a botched spike by C.J. Carr turned into a costly fumble. In the second half, Notre Dame started fighting back. Bubba Frazier recovered a muffed punt, and Spencer Poroth added two field goals. Then true freshman Jonas Walton punched in a touchdown and silenced the crowd, followed by a two-point conversion, giving Notre Dame its first lead, 24 to 21. Jaden Sanders followed that up with a huge interception, but BYU entered with a late touchdown. Carr gave the Irish one final chance, driving down to the seven-yard line, but his last-second pass to Jaden Greathouse fell incomplete.

MARCUS FREEMAN: We didn't play to our standard across-the-board part. Part of it's because of things they were doing, and part of it is you know some things that we did to Notre Dame that we can't allow to happen, and so a lot of things we gotta use from this game to attack as we go into the bye week, and we move forward from there.

CJ CARR: Just gotta go back to work, put the work in, do what we do. I think we, you know, practice well all week, and gotta continue to to string those together through the bye week, and then into to whoever we got next. I thought we you know we moved the ball well and just didn't end up punching in some of those red zone opportunities we had. So credit to them for holding strong in the red zone and tough tough team play tough good players.

Towards the end of the game, there was a lot of frustration on the sidelines from head coach Marcus Freeman, Mike Denbrock yelling at the refs, even players pushing each other. But at the end of the day, I think it came down to who executed better. I'm sure there's tons to clean up, but they do have a bye week this week and return to Boston for the Navy game. We'll have a full show for you guys then.
