Man charged in deadly shooting of South Bend teenager

SOUTH BEND, Ind,. --- Officials have charged 39-year-old Sidney James Hockaday with murder, in the deadly shooting that killed 16-year-old Noelle Riggins in South Bend.

Riggins was shot and killed last Friday, Oct. 21, in the 500 block of Pennsylvania Avenue around 3:30 pm.

According to court documents two phones were found next to Riggins.

Warrants determined one belonged to Riggins and the other to Hockaday.

Hockaday's phone revealed the last communication between the two was to set up a meeting, with Hockaday intending to sell Riggins Marijuana in the area of the shooting.

Witnesses and surveillance video revealed a gold-colored Chevy Tahoe near the scene, with the surveillance video showing the Tahoe stop in front of the yard where Riggins was later found, with the front passenger door appearing to open.

Gunshots were also heard before the Tahoe peels away.

Witnesses on the scene described the driver of the Tahoe matching Hockaday's description and later selected him from a picture line up.

Court documents say a week after the shooting Hockaday "spontaneously and voluntarily" surrendered himself at the South Bend Police Department without being summoned.

Hockaday is now facing several felony charges including Murder, two counts of dealing Marijuana and a fire enhancement charge.

The sentence for murder alone ranges from 45-65 years.

Hockaday is now being held at the St. Joseph County Jail.
