Man charged with OWI after crashing into utility pole, leaving scene

ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. -- A man charged with crashing into a utility pole while drunk, told police he left the scene because he "did not know what to do."
Court documents say Lee Rasavong was driving south on C.R. 15 Tuesday around 3:30 p.m. when he left the road, south of C.R. 28. A witness reported Rasavong crashed before exiting his Honda CR-V and walking away.
When an officer arrived, the witness reported that he saw Rasavong get picked up by another vehicle and leave south on C.R. 15. The officer noted the Honda was "completely damaged" after crashing into a mailbox and a NIPSCO utility pole.
The officer looked up the registered owner of the vehicle, finding that the address was nearby. While driving to the owner's home, the officer was advised Rasavong is the husband of the registered owner.
When the officer arrived at the address, he found Rasavong and his wife standing in the driveway. Rasavong admitted to the officer that he swerved to avoid hitting a squirrel. He said he left the scene because he had never had that happen before. Rasavong and his wife were reportedly planning to return to the scene. Rasavong admitted that he had two beers after he got off work.
Reports show Rasavong agreed to a field sobriety test, which he failed, before getting a chemical breath test at the Elkhart County Jail.
Rasavong is charged with Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated Endangering a Person, Leaving the Scene of an Accident, and Operating a Vehicle with Alcohol Concentration Equivalent to at Least .08 but less than .15.
