Man convicted of murder in Mishawaka fails to appeal sentence
ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- A man serving a 75-year prison sentence for a 2022 murder in Mishawaka will remain behind bars.
The Indiana Court of Appeals rejected Nashawn Stephens' appeal in the deadly shooting of Tychius Derrickson.
According to the Indiana Attorney General's Office, the court found overwhelming evidence, "including witness testimony, timing, physical evidence, and Stephens’s post-crime behavior" that supported the jury’s guilty verdict this past February.
Stephens is accused of beating Derrickson after finding him in the bedroom with Kyndall Dickerson, then dragging him outside before shooting him. Dickerson, who told police she was occasionally sexual partners with both men, was also charged with several counts.
An investigation found the two plotted the shooting, with Dickerson allegedly telling Stephens she would leave a key under the mat, knowing Derrickson would be coming over.
Dickerson pleaded guilty to Robbery Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury and her other charges, including Murder, were dropped. Dickerson was sentenced to 28 years in prison in April with three years suspended.
