Man drowns after saving his girlfriend from drowning

MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. -- A man drowned in Lake Michigan right after saving his girlfriend from drowning at Washington Park Beach on Sunday, according to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

First responders were called to the beach at 4:38 p.m. for reports of a person missing in the water.

Donald Turner, 28, was swimming with his girlfriend when she began to struggle in the water.

Turner helped his girlfriend to safety, then went underwater and did not resurface, reports said.

A nearby swimmer located Turner and firefighters attempted life saving measures.

Turner was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
