Man extricated from vehicle after two car crash

The Cass County Sheriff’s office investigated a two car crash Sunday that sent to people to the hospital Sunday.

The call went out around 1:29 p.m. in Pokagon Township.

The crash happened on M-51 Highway near Pokagon Highway.

Deputies who responded to the scene say 33-year-old Heather Smith of Dowagiac was attempting to turn left into a driveway.

That’s when 73-year-old Wayne Kerby of South Bend was heading north on M-51 and hit Smith’s vehicle.

Kerby’s car went off the highway hitting a tree and overturned.

Kerby had to be extricated from the vehicle by the Pokagon Township Fire Department.

Both Kerby and his passenger were treated and transported to South Bend Memorial Hospital for minor injuries.

The Cass County Sheriff's Office was assisted at the scene by Pokagon Tribal Police, Pokagon Township Fire Department, and SMACAS Ambulance Service.

Police say all parties were wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash.
