Man flown to hospital after being hit by shrapnel

Fulton County officials responded to a man who had serious injuries after shrapnel hit him as a result of him shooting at a target.

The call went out around 6:33 p.m. Sunday.

Police and emergency personnel were dispatched to the 1400 block of East 400 south in Fulton County.

Police say 36-year-old Chris Gualtieri of Rochester had traumatic injuries to his arm and neck.

The injuries were caused by debris after the man was shooting at a target, using Tannerite, with a high powered rifle.

The Tannerite was placed in a discarded appliance. After the Tannerite caused the explosion to go off, shrapnel was thrown from the explosion and caused his injuries.

Gualtieri was given life saving measures at the scene by Rochester Fire and Rescue and Lutheran EMS.  He was then flown from the scene by Samaritan Air Ambulance to South Bend Memorial Hospital for treatment.

The Fulton County Sheriff would like to remind everyone to use extreme caution and follow manufacturer’s instructions when using firearms and Tannerite.

Assisting the Fulton County Sheriff’s Department was Indiana State Police, Rochester Fire Department, Lutheran EMS and Samaritan.
