BENTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- Benton Township Police are investigating a shooting that sent one man to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the right side of his head. Police got to the scene in the 200 block of East Delaware around 1:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon for reports of a gunshot victim.
The victim was found and taken to Spectrum Health Lakeland and then airlifted to Grand Rapids for more treatment.
The victim told officers he was driving on Delaware when he was flagged down by a tall, skinny black man in his 20s who was asking for a ride.
The man got into the car and showed the victim his gun and then demanded the victim's phone.
There was a struggle over the gun, which lead to the shooting.
A K-9 unit was called to the scene, but couldn't find the suspect.
Anyone with any information can contact Benton Township Police at 269-926-8221 or Michiana Crime Stoppers at 574-235-9115.
