Man reported missing on Diamond Lake charged with home invasion

In the beginning of the month, it was feared something had happened to 46-year-old Kurt DeYoung. He'd gone out on his pontoon boat on Wednesday, April 8. Days later, that boat washed up on the shore of Diamond Island in Cassopolis and DeYoung was not with it.

Nearly a week later, on Tuesday, April 14,  the Cass County Sheriff's Department found DeYoung on Diamond Island, not far from where his boat was initially discovered.

After being treated at a hospital, he told authorities his boat's motor stopped working, his phone died and he remembered looking for a place to stay. He said he found a residence with an open door and did not recall anything after that.

On April 22, the Cass County prosecutor charged DeYong with two counts of home invasion and two counts of larceny. Prosecutor Victor Fitz said the charges are based on an incident that happened between April 8 and April 14.

DeYoung was arrested Wednesday.

If convicted, the maximum penalty is 15 years and a $3,000 fine.
