Man rescues ten-year-old from drowning

A Battle Creek man rescued a ten-year-old boy from drowning in a pool at the Silver Beach Hotel in St. Joseph Saturday.

Officers of the St. Joseph Department of Public Safety responded to reports of a drowning at the hotel just after 6:00 p.m. When they arrived they found the boy breathing and conscious thanks to the actions of Tim Rose, 29, of Battle Creek, MI.

Melvin Jackson, 10, of Benton Harbor was at the hotel for his cousins birthday party. Rose saw Jackson at the bottom of the pool in the eight-foot-deep area. Rose said he thought Jackson was trying to see how long he could hold his breath. Jackson was under the water for at least a minute before Rose realized the boy was in trouble.

Officers say Rose dove into the pool, brought Jackson out with the help of bystanders, and then performed CPR on the boy. Jackson responded after two minutes and began breathing on his own.

He was taken to Lakeland Medical Center where he was treated and later released.
