On Dec. 21, 2025, multiple police departments responded to a home in Mishawaka to rescue five hostages, including children.

Chad Bean shot at members of SWAT at the scene, with an investigation showing Bean fired his gun 15 times. The officers returned fire, and Bean was hit. The shooting was later ruled to be justified.

Bean was found guilty in August for felony counts including Criminal Confinement, Stalking, Attempted Murder, and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Serious Violent Felon.

Bean was sentenced to a total of 158 years in prison.

Citing the danger to the community, Bean's criminal history, and the fact he was on parole at the time of the incident, the judge pronounced the following sentences:

• Count I: Criminal Confinement - Level 3 Felony: 10 years to be served consecutively
• Count II: Criminal Confinement - Level 3 Felony: 10 years to be served consecutively
• Count III: Criminal Confinement - Level 3 Felony: 10 years to be served consecutively
• Count IV: Criminal Confinement - Level 3 Felony: 10 years to be served concurrently
• Count V: Criminal Confinement - Level 3 Felony: 10 years to be served concurrently
• Count VI: Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Serious Violent Felon - Level 4 Felony: 6 years to be served consecutively
• Count VIII: Stalking - Level 6 Felony: 2 years to be served consecutively
• Count IX: Attempted Murder - Level 1 Felony: 30 years to be served consecutively
• Count X: Attempted Murder - Level 1 Felony: 30 years to be served consecutively
• Count XI: Attempted Murder - Level 1 Felony: 30 years to be served consecutively
• Count XII: Attempted Murder - Level 1 Felony: 30 years to be served consecutively
• Count XIII: Attempted Murder - Level 1 Felony: 30 years to be served concurrently
• Count XIV Attempted Murder - Level 1 Felony: 30 years to be served concurrently

Due to Double Jeopardy concerns, the judge did not enter a judgment of conviction for the jury’s guilty verdict in Count VII: Stalking, a Level 4 Felony.
