Man thought to be a fake agent is a real FBI agent, FBI officials say

CLAY TOWNSHIP, Ind.-- A concerned homeowner in St. Joseph County caught a man on camera she thought to be posing as an FBI agent.

The incident happened in a neighborhood near Indiana State Road 933 and Cleveland Road on April 2.

FBI officials confirm the man in her surveillance camera is in fact an FBI agent.

“He identified himself as sergeant, it was hard to discern the name it sounded like Gurney, and showed me a false I.D,” said the concerned homeowner.

An FBI spokesperson said in an email that agents do not show badges, they show their credentials which the agent did. The spokesperson also said he was not saying “sergeant” but rather “agent.”

The incident prompted her to keep her door closed and contact St. Joseph County Police.

An FBI official confirms the agent in the video is a new agent in Michiana and suggests anyone who comes across a similar situation to contact the FBI directly.
