A Michigan Department of Transportation employee was killed in a freak accident on I-94 Wednesday morning, according to the Berrien County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies were called to I-94 near mile marker 33 in Benton Charter Township for an injury accident around 7:15 a.m.
When they arrived, they learned a semi car hauler lost two of its tires and one of the tires struck an MDOT worker who was along the side of the highway, reports said.
The victim, 48-year-old Kevin White, was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
"He was a good guy, a real stand up guy, I hate to hear that something like this happened to him," Neighbor Jevonne Stevens said.
White was also Township Supervisor for Benton Charter Township.
The driver of the semi is cooperating with the investigation. Alcohol, drugs and speed do not appear to be factors in the crash, reports said.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
