Media Literacy Week: Day 1 Access

It's Media Literacy Week.

The mission of media literacy week is to bring attention to this topic through education by uniting hundreds of organizers, educators and other partners dedicated to the cause.

The initiative's multi-part theme celebrates one of the five components of media literacy's definition each day: access, analyze, evaluate, create and act.

Today's focus is access, which means how, when, and where people can utilize the tools, tech, and digital skills necessary to succeed and thrive, as well as how often you're able to access them.

Experts say understanding how media, the internet and other platforms work is important.

Also, important is accessing information without censorship, or ideas limited by paywalls, social media and search engine algorithms.

Since access is often times challenging for marginalized and minority communities.

Restricted access disproportionately impacts civic engagement and the representation of these types of voices in media.

Stay with ABC57 news for continued coverage of media literacy week every day this week, brought to you by the nonprofit, National Association for Media Literacy Education (NAMLE).

Tomorrow, we'll explore the next theme, analyze, and the role the concept plays on a larger scale when it comes to identifying and tackling misinformation.
