Meet Mufasa: The new K9 Officer for the St. Joseph Department of Public Safety
ST. JOSEPH, Mich. -- St. Joseph Department of Public Safety is bringing back its K9 program with the addition of Mufusa, a 1-year-old German Sheppard and Malinois mix.
Mufusa will work alongside Public Safety Officer Ryan Streelman, who has been with the city for three years. The two are preparing to begin six weeks of training at FM K9 in Berrian Springs, where Mufusa will train to become a tracking and narcotics dog.
"The City of St. Joe had one about early 2000s, but since then we have not had one. But thanks to our amazing community, we have we brought the program back to the city of St. Joe." Streelman said.
Streelman also said having a K9 will give officers another resource when responding to calls and investigating problems in the community.
Mufusa will eventually receive his own ballistic vest, donated by a community supporter. He will also have different collars and equipment for tracking detection.
Streelman credited community support for helping bring the program back, specifically recognizing American Electric Power, Indiana Michigan Power, and the Feline Foundation for their contributions.
"Honestly, I went out and asked for stuff. They said yes. They saw what I was trying to do, and they said yes." Streelman said.
The department hopes Mufusa training will strengthen its ability to serve and protect St. Joseph community.
