NOW: Memorial grows for 17-year-old boy fatally shot by police in Elkhart

ELKHART, Ind. — A memorial continues to grow at High Dive Pavilion in Elkhart following a fatal officer involved shooting early Sunday morning.

Family members have identified the 17-year-old as Bryan Ramirez-Gomez, an Elkhart High School senior who was shot early Sunday morning at a closed public park after officers “observed a suspicious vehicle with several male and female passengers, some of whom were juveniles”. Police say officers allegedly found guns in and around the vehicle.

The Elkhart County Homicide Unit is now leading the investigation.

Since the shooting, family and friends have gathered at the scene, laying flowers and lighting candles while sharing stories, prayers, and calling for more information about what led to two officers firing their weapons.

“Long live Bryan, forever 17,” said a group of loved ones gathered around the growing memorial.

Friends and family members told ABC57 Bryan was someone who always had their backs and enjoyed staying active. They are urging the city to release body camera footage from the incident.

Investigators told ABC57 there is no update to share at this time, but they are aware of video circulating on social media showing witnesses screaming and pleading not to let the teen die.

In the original police report, officers said they provided first aid at the scene after one officer sustained a minor injury.

Both officers involved have been placed on leave as the investigation continues.

Mayor Rod Roberson released a statement Monday afternoon, saying in part, “The loss of a 17-year-old member of our community is devastating. My deepest condolences are with his family and loved ones.”

The statement continued, “I know emotions are raw right now, with comments and videos being spread on social media. Please allow this investigation to run its course.”

The mayor also said the prosecutor’s office will review the investigation once it is complete and that the results will be made available to the public as soon as legally possible.

The investigation remains ongoing anyone with information is being asked to contact the Homicide Unit at 574-295-2825.

A vigil is expected to be held Tuesday evening.
