Messy morning mix

Rain, sleet and snow all in the forecast for Thursday. The greatest concern with this messy mix will be the potential for freezing rain early Thursday morning.

A Freezing Rain Advisory (Fig 1) includes the northeast half of Michiana between 4 AM to 9 AM. Temperatures will be critical during this time frame.

ForecastTrack shows temperatures around the freezing mark at 7 a.m. ( Fig 2) with rain likely ( Fig 3). Air temperature can be above freezing, but ground temperature could still be at or below freezing. Roads, especially bridges and overpasses can still be slick even after temperatures break 32°.

Greatest concern will be on the morning drive, expect wet roads the rest of the day even when snow starts after 4 p.m. ( Fig 4). The greatest potential for icy roads will be from Elkhart ( City), north and east.

Stay with the ABC-57 First Warning Neighborhood Weather Team as we track this messy mix. Turn to ABC-57 News starting at 4:30 AM Thursday for the latest road conditions.
