GRANGER, Ind. -- Despite travel advisories, slick roads, and consistent snow-fall — some Michiana locals just can’t be brought down by the winter weather.
Kole King, a Michigan resident, stopped by a gas station in Niles Saturday night to fuel up his snow mobile.
“We’re out here having fun,” King said, “Got all this snow, so we’re just trying to make the best time about it.”
King and his friend plan to ride in cornfields, encouraging others with snowmobiles to take a ride this weekend.
Other residents in Michigan are just simply used to these weather conditions.
“It’s nasty,” Kenny McInnis said about the roads, “I’m supposed to be going to a party down the street here.”
McInnis is taking it slow, but not all Michiana residents can say the same. Some locals have taken the opportunity to do some stunt driving in snow-covered parking lots.
Even though locals are used to this type of weather, road conditions deteriorated quickly and became dangerous, making road travel risky.
Berrien County Dispatch responded to roughly 100 crashes and slide offs before the sun set on Saturday evening. St Joesph County Dispatch responded to 25.
"The toll road is getting so bad,” Louise Lapaco, owner of Tony’s Mobil Service, said, “They’re not letting us do anymore winching up there.”
Due to safety concerns, the police department called off towing efforts on the toll road. Vehicles that get stuck will be left behind in ditches or highway shoulders until the storm is over.
