Michiana celebrates Mexican Independence Day

GOSHEN, Ind. -- Monday, the Michiana community is gathering to celebrate Mexican Independence Day.

From colorful clothing to decked-out cars and Mexican flags flying high, this celebration not only marks the start of Hispanic Heritage Month but also highlights Mexican Independence Day.

This year marks 203 years since Mexico declared its independence from Spain, and here in Michiana, the community is coming together to honor the occasion.

Mexican Independence Day, celebrated on September 16, serves as a strong reminder of the lasting contributions Latinos make to Michiana and the rich cultural heritage they share with the community.

On Sunday, Goshen held a Hispanic Heritage Festival with bands, food and vendors, with about 600 people in attendance.

On Saturday the annual Radio Sabor Latino's event saw the parking lot of the Marycrest building on Western Avenue transformed into a vibrant celebration, complete with traditional Mexican food, live music, and family-friendly entertainment.

"It is important to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, and to feel proud of being Latino and knowing that we are in this community. We're not leaving here, here we are, and they love us and everyone, no matter where they are from. We Latinos come in all colors, in all flavors, in everything. Be proud of that. Go talk to your neighbor go say hello to the neighbor. Be friendly, don't be afraid and be proud of who we are and where we are," President of Radio Sabor Latino Felix Marquez said.
