NOW: Michiana experiencing gas price relief ahead of Memorial Day Weekend

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Both Indiana and Michigan are seeing a little bit of a recent drop in gas prices, according to GasBuddy's Head of Petroleum Analysis, Patrick De Haan.

Indiana suspended its gas use and excise taxes, which is why, De Haan says Indiana is one of the few states in the country where you can find gas under $4 a gallon.

“It's roughly 65 cents lower than Michigan, 60 cents lower than Ohio, and all of that is just because the gas and use taxes, the excise and use tax, add up to almost 60 cents a gallon. So, getting a big break. However, it is costing the state of Indiana about $5 million every day in lost revenue,” said De Haan.

He says there’s still uncertainty for gas prices as we approach summer.

“Just a lot of variables right now. We don't know how things are going to go with the Strait of Hormuz. We don't know if the gas tax suspensions will be extended, just a lot of uncertainty," said De Haan. "It's very difficult to tell motorists what to expect this summer with all these variables that could change."

In South Bend, even with taxes suspended, De Haan says prices are about 90 cents a gallon higher compared to this time last year.

If you’re planning to fill up, do it sooner rather than later, because there may be a bit of a price hike as we get closer to Memorial Day, according to De Haan.

He says the recent jump in diesel prices was due in part to refinery issues in the region, which he says are improving. De Haan thinks diesel prices will fall back below $6 in the next week or two in Indiana.
