Michiana's typical weather for meteorological fall

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- September is here, which means meteorological fall is as well.

Today marks the official end to meteorological summer, which runs from June through August.

This summer was warmer than normal, and it was also slightly drier than normal to near normal precipitation.

The National Weather Service breaks the year into four seasons that do not follow the astronomical seasons.

For tracking weather and climate, it is much easier to document information with the beginning of the month rather than 20 days into the month, when astronomical seasons begin.

Meteorological fall runs from September 1st to November 30th.

During that time, our average weather conditions turn colder as winter approaches and the days get shorter as well.

South Bend has a typical high/low for September 1st of 79/58 but by the end of the month on the 30th it drops down to 69/48. We typically see 3.49 inches of rain over the month of September as well.

October 1st has a normal high/low of 69/47 which drops down to 55/37 by Halloween. October is the wettest month of meteorological fall with 3.72 inches of rain.

November starts with our normal high/low of 55/37 which cools off to 41/27 to end the month. November is the driest month of meteorological fall, only seeing 2.78 inches of rain.

We also see our first snowfall of the season near the first of November.

Enjoy the rest of our summer weather while we have it! Next weekend looks cool, only in the 60s as fall makes a gradual approach.
