Michigan City locals arrested after fleeing scene of a vehicle crash

LAKE COUNTY, Ind. – The Indiana State Police reported that on Saturday around 2:20 p.m., a trooper responded to a crash on I-80/94 near the 14 mile-marker.

The trooper reported a male and female had fled from a Buick Regal that was involved in the crash and were walking eastbound on the westbound side of the highway.

As the trooper arrived, the trooper observed the Buick on the inside shoulder, abandoned and with disabling damage to the passenger side.

The report states there was a tractor-trailer on the outside shoulder, investigations found the truck and trailer had been struck by the Buick.

The department reports a male and female were detained, identified as 21-year-old Anthony Hampton and 24-year-old Mersadis Schroder of Michigan City.

It was determined Ms. Schroder had been driving the Buick at the time of the crash, stated the report.

Authorities reported the individuals fled the scene carrying bags but the suspects denied carrying the bags. Upon locating Ms. Schroder’s bag, it contained a scale, baggies, paraphernalia, and multiple butane lighters.

Both subjects were later transported to the Lake County Jail for processing, stated the report.

Hampton faces preliminary charges of possession of methamphetamine and false informing. Schroder faces preliminary charges of possession of a synthetic drug lookalike, false informing, leaving the scene of a property damage crash, operator never licensed, and possession of paraphernalia.

The driver of the semi was not injured in the crash.
