Michigan Street to close for construction

The city of South Bend will start another phase in the city's Smart Streets Initiative Tuesday.

Last month, the city started two-way street conversions downtown.

Tuesday, the city will construct two roundabouts along Michigan Street, one on Bartlett, the other on Marion.

With new construction comes new obstacles and in this case complete road closure of Michigan for several blocks.

The city is advising drivers take a detour at La Salle across the river and take Niles to North Shore to get through Michigan.

Beacon Health is also prepping for this change.

A representative says they've been talking to the city about efficient routes as safety is a top priority.
