Mishawaka Common Council approves change in police shifts, pay raises

MISHAWAKA, Ind. - Two significant changes are headed to the Mishawaka Police Department in 2024.

On Monday, the Mishawaka Common Council approved an ordinance that will now require police officers to work 12-hour shifts.

Starting January 1, the police department will switch to this new schedule, which also includes a two-week shift structure. Officers will work 12-hour shifts on Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays one week, followed by Wednesdays and Thursdays the next week.

The council also improved pay raises for the department.

Law enforcement currently earn the following:

  • Captains: $74,361
  • Lieutenants: $72,532
  • Sergeants: $70,805
  • Patrol first class: $69,065

Yearly rates will change to the following in 2024:

  • Captains: $93,500
  • Lieutenants: $92,000
  • Sergeants: $90,500
  • Patrol first class: $89,000
