Mishawaka High School students protest ICE Monday morning, administration notes possible disciplinary actions
ABC57 MISHAWAKA, Ind. -- A number of Mishawaka High School students held a walkout protest regarding the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency Monday morning according to administration officials.
A letter sent out to parents and staff on Monday states some students chose to leave classes during the school day to protest.
The high school's letter states in part, "We respect our students’ right to express their views and understand that national and global issues can deeply affect young people. At the same time, our primary responsibility during the school day is to ensure the safety, supervision, and education of all students."
School officials say staff and administration monitored the situation closely.
Staff reminded students who chose to leave the building during instructional time of school attendance policies and safety expectations.
The school letter clarifies students who left campus without permission were considered absent for class periods missed, in accordance with district policy.
School officials added that disciplinary consequences, if applicable, will be handled individually as per the student handbook.
The letter closes with the following:
"Our priority throughout the day was to maintain a safe and orderly environment for all students, whether they chose to participate in the walkout or remain in class. There were no safety concerns reported during the event.
We encourage families to have open conversations with their children about civic engagement, respectful expression, and the importance of following school procedures while participating in advocacy.
If you have questions or concerns, please feel free to contact the school office. Thank you for your continued support and partnership."
