Mishawaka home surrounded by SWAT, Battell Elementary locked down

MISHAWAKA, Ind. -- Police put a Mishawaka elementary school on lockdown after a fight broke out at a nearby home!

It all started around 9 a.m. on Tuesday.

Police say a man beat up his girlfriend and then locked himself inside his East Battell Street home.

The SWAT team arrived and police put Battell Elementary on lockdown as a precaution.

"I actually went into Battell School and had them go into a lockdown mode for their safety, making sure all the children were away from that side of the building, just in case we had something happen, cause we had the SWAT team coming out to the call,” said Sgt. Tim Williams of the Mishawaka Police Department.

Police arrested the man after an hour-long stand-off. The school district says none of the students were in danger at any time.
