Mishawaka man sentenced for unlawful possession of a firearm

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – A Mishawaka man was sentenced earlier this month for unlawful possession of a firearm.

Pokagon Tribal Police arrested Michael Binder, 38, back in April 2018.

Police had approached Binder and a female companion in the parking lot of Four Winds Casino South Bend and they smelled marijuana coming from the minivan.

They investigated further and found a small amount of marijuana and about 10 grams of methamphetamine in the vehicle.

The officers found a loaded handgun in the car as well, which Binder admitted to possessing during his sentencing.

On Jan. 3, Binder plead guilty and was sentenced to 63 months in prison followed by one year supervised release.

This case was being investigated by the FBI and the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Tribal Police Department and was being handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Luke N. Reilander.
