Mishawaka Mayor Wood's State of the City address highlights momentum in the Princess City
MISHAWAKA, Ind. - The Juday Creek Water Treatment Plant went online Thursday, ready to treat 8.2 million gallons of drinking water a day.
The city received a $1 million grant from the state for road repair and crime dropped by 6.5% last year.
Mayor Wood believes this will keep new residents moving to Mishawaka.
Mayor Wood stated, "Well Mishawaka has some great fundamentals that we focus on over time. And those fundamentals have put us in a great position to grow and keep pace with trying to attract people into a quality environment where people are, first of all safe, where they want to live, and where they have a great quality of life."
Mayor Wood has been avoiding any public comments on his son's recent controversies and made it clear, once again, he would not answer questions about them.
But Thursday night, the city did tell ABC57 NightTeam the mayor's son, Joe Wood, no longer works for the City of Mishawaka, and no longer lives in the area.
He had two recent run-ins with police, one of those, caught on camera here.
Then a video surfaced of Joe Wood mimicking a cop in a joking manner while holding what looked like a gun pointed at two people, including another city employee, while laughing and repeatedly using the "n-word".
We asked Mayor Wood whether the city plans to fund any diversity programs, or racial sensitivity training for city employees.
Mayor Wood responded, "Well, we have to go through the budget to do those things. But, you know, we're always looking at providing training for our staff, whatever that training looks like to make sure that you know, we're ready to respond and, and, you know, treat people how, you know, we live in a, we have small town values here, which means we expect to treat everybody fairly and you know, kind of, we just will make sure we continue to invest in training for all kinds of different things."
