Mistrial declared in trial for January shootings

A man was convicted on one count and a mistrial was declared on the other four counts against him related to a shooting that injured two 12-year-old girls on January 3.

James Carter was charged with attempted murder, two counts of battery with a deadly weapon, criminal recklessness and pointing a firearm.

Carter was convicted of pointing a firearm. The jury could not come to unanimous agreement on the other four counts.

He could be sentenced on the charge as a level 6 felony, 6 months to 30 months, or a class A misdemeanor, up to one year.

Sentencing is scheduled for July 7.
