Monday morning Elkhart shooting

NOW: Monday morning Elkhart shooting

ELKHART, Ind. — 19-year-old male is dead after a shooting early Monday morning.

A news release from the Elkhart Police Department shared the Elkhart County Homicide Unit is investigating a deadly shooting. Shortly before 8 a.m., the Elkhart City 911 Communications Center received a 911 call of a shooting with injuries in the 2600 block of Morton Avenue. Elkhart Police Department officers and first responders dispatched and arrived shortly after they received the call.

According to EPD, once officers arrived, they found a male victim with apparent gunshot wound(s) outside of a home. Despite lifesaving efforts, the 19-year-old male was pronounced dead at the scene.

No arrests have been made, and police say this is an isolated incident and there is no danger to the public.

The Crime Scene Investigation truck was on the scene and left shortly after 12:45. From the back of the home, a tent was blocking what appears to be where police and first responders found the 19-year-old shot.

A neighbor didn't want to be on camera but says he got home just before shots rang out.

"I came in today in the morning, it was like 7:50 something, it wasn't yet 8 a.m. I heard a couple, like four gunshots. Two to four gunshots for sure," he shared.

However, that's not all he says he heard.

"I was telling police officers earlier today that last night, I heard a bit of arguing."

He says he didn't hear a car speed off, so he didn't think it was a drive by shooting.

"As soon as the gunshots happened, it sounded like a young lady screamed. After that, police arrived."

He tells ABC57 he didn't connect the dots between what heard Sunday night and Monday morning until after police arrived. He says this isn't normal in his neighborhood. The scene is just a one-minute drive from Monger Elementary School.

"Like I said, this neighborhood's been quiet for the most part since we've moved here. This is the first time something like this has ever happened. Also, because we have the school really close here, so it's very surprising."

According to the Director of Communications for Elkhart Community Schools, Monger Elementary School was not notified by EPD to go on lockdown.

The victim's name has not yet been released.
