Montana TikTok ban could be first of what's to come
SOUTH BEND, Ind.----
The Montana TikTok ban raises many questions of rights, plausibility, and if other states including Michigan or Indiana could be next.
The measure will likely be challenged but could serve as a testing ground for the TikTok free America many lawmakers would like to see.
The State of Indiana is no stranger to legislation against the app, already blocking TikTok from State devices.
Attorney General Todd Rokita has been openly speaking out against the app since he sued the Beijing based tech company at the end of last year.
So could a complete ban be next?
150 million users scroll through the app, and it looks different for everyone.
From dance videos to dog vids, the app uses users' data to customize their "for you" pages to fit their interests.
Politicians are worried what the apps parent company, ByteDance is using this data for.
Experts like, Anthony Fargo a Media Law professor at Indiana University told ABC57 about potential cases that would restrict the law from being upheld in court, involving the first amendment, and that other American apps are also collecting users data, however if passed due to the apps potential threat to national security, he believes it won't stop there.
"certainly, If Montana succeeds in blocking TikTok.. I'm not completely ruling that out…it does raise certain national security concerns. I'm sure other states will follow suite… my guess is though if they do succeed it will increase pressure on the Biden administration to do something similar," he stated.
