SOUTH BEND - A monument honoring the contributions of late civil rights hero Martin Luther King Jr. and former Notre Dame president Fr. Theodore Hesburgh was unveiled Wednesday in downtown South Bend. The monument depicts the famous picture of the two holding hands while singing at a civil rights rally in Chicago in 1964. ABC 57's Julia Palazzo marched alongside city leaders and neighbors to the Leighton Plaza where it was unveiled to the public.
