Moped driver killed in crash early Friday morning

FULTON COUNTY, Ind. -- A moped driver was killed in a crash on SR 17 early Friday morning.

Around 12:40 a.m., emergency crews were called to SR 17 north of CR 200 North for a crash involving a scooter or moped.

Deputies with the Fulton County Sheriff's Department and troopers with the Indiana State Police also responded to the scene.

The investigation showed the moped, driven by 45-year-old Jackie J. Shuey II of Rochester was traveling southbound on SR17 when the moped struck a downed tree in the road, which was just south of a curve in the road, deputies said.

A strong thunderstorm had moved through the area just prior to the accident and deputies believe the tree fell during the storm.

Shuey was ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Deputies said he was not wearing a helmet.

The fatal crash happened two miles south of a fatal crash that happened Wednesday afternoon.

The following agencies assisted the Fulton County Sheriff’s Department: Fulton County 911 Dispatch, Indiana State Police, Aubbeenaubbee Fire Department, Lutheran EMS and Fulton County Coroner.
