More severe weather across Michiana

NOW: More severe weather across Michiana

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Severe weather was seen across our area Tuesday night. If you were out and about in the afternoon in Michigan, you probably came face to face with some hail.

Storm reports across our area in the past 24 hours show the dominant threat last night ended up being hail.

Reports show hail up to 2 inches fell, the same size if not a bit larger than a golf ball to ping pong ball size.

Normally with hail we see gusty conditions, however there were only a handful of wind damage reports across southwest Michigan. The largest impact from this storm was a couple of dents in some cars there.

With the rounds of severe weather Michiana is expecting to see Wednesday evening, many threats are on the table, some more localized, and some more widespread.

It’s a threat we don’t talk too much about, but see it constantly, and that is heavy rainfall bringing flash flooding potential.

The National Weather Service has already issued a flood watch, active starting at 2 p.m., lasting until 2 a.m., Thursday.

That’s thanks to the significant rainfall Michiana is expected to see through the evening. Some areas could see as high as 2 to 3 inches, with others getting all the way up to 4 inches in a short amount of time.

This will cause excessive runoff and increase the risk for flash flooding, especially in urban areas with poor drainage and low-lying areas.

Of course, more expressly dangerous hazards are on the table tonight, so make sure you’re staying updated on-air, online, and on the ABC57 weather app with this volatile situation.
