Motorcyclist airlifted after crashing into car while fleeing from police

ABC 57

ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. -- The Elkhart County Sheriff's Office reports officers with the Wakarusa Police Department attempted a traffic stop on two motorcycles near S.R. 19 and Nelsons Parkway on Thursday around 9:24 p.m.

The report states both motorcyclists fled, leading to a pursuit by the officers.

The Wakarusa officers were eventually joined by officers from the Nappanee Police Department.

During the pursuit, authorities say one of the motorcycles, operated by 21-year-old Dominic Blair of Pierceton, turned west onto Market Street in Nappanee at a high rate of speed.

A 2015 Chevrolet Equinox, driven by a 26-year-old Nappanee woman, was turning left onto Market Street from Morningside Drive at the same time and didn't see Blair.

The Equinox continued onto Market Street at which point Blair crashed into the front passenger's side of the vehicle.

Authorities say Blair continued on his motorcycle for several hundred feet before losing control.

Blair was ejected from his motorcycle and landed on Market Street as his bike flipped through the air several times before stopping next to a residence at 759 Market St.

Blair was airlifted to the hospital for a laceration to the face, a laceration to the head, and a possible broken wrist.

The 26-year-old driver was uninjured.

ECSO is investigating the crash while the pursuit is being investigated by the NPD and the WPD.

This investigation is ongoing.
