MSU students working to preserve Civil War history

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Letters and documents from the Civil War are hard to find over the years, but a team at Michigan State is changing that.

The university is in the process of posting thousands of letters and diaries from soldiers online. Many of these have not been seen for decades.

MSU received the soldiers' documents from a museum and have been preparing a website the past couple of years.

A graduate assistant from England is helping and finds American History fascinating.

"You're learning about various individuals carrying on relationships, maybe with lots of different people," Ben Dettmar said. "You're learning how hard it was on the front line for a lot of soldiers.

The Civil War website goes live Oct. 8.
