Three injured in multiple-vehicle crash on Middlebury Street

ELKHART, Ind. – Elkhart Police are investigating a crash that happened early Thursday morning and involved multiple vehicles.

Police were dispatched to the 700 block of Middlebury Street at 5:15 a.m. after receiving reports about an injury crash.

The driver of a Ford was traveling on Middlebury Street near Tipton when his vehicle was rear ended by a Volkswagen, reports said.

After the crash, two occupants of the Volkswagen and a resident were in the roadway when a Chevy struck the Volkswagen, causing it to hit the three pedestrians in the road, reports said.

When the Chevy hit the Volkswagen, it caused a chain reaction crash involving three vehicles being driven and two parked vehicles, reports said.

The people in the roadway were all injured in the crash. The driver of the Volkswagen, a 28-year-old woman suffered a punctured lung and fractures. The passenger, a 2-year-old, suffered fractures. The resident, a 41-year-old woman, suffered broken bones. All three were taken to the hospital for treatment.

There were a total of eight vehicles involved in the crashes.

Police said alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crashes.
