ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. – State Road 23, between Main Street and South Bend Avenue, will have multiple lane and road closures beginning on Wednesday, the Indiana Department of Transportation said.

SR 23 between Fellows Street to the south side of Jefferson Boulevard is set to be closed on or after Wednesday for a road-widening project. The ramps at SR 23 and Lincoln Way/State Road 933 and SR 23 and Mishawaka Avenue will be closed as well.

INDOT is asking drivers to use an alternative route. The official detour follows Michigan Street/US 30, US 20 and Bremen Highway/North Main Street.

Traffic heading northeast on SR 23 will continue on Sample before a hard road closure before the ramps on Lincoln Way. Some business access will be maintained, as SR 23 to downtown South Bend will be available to motorists.

A resurfacing and preventative maintenance project between Michigan Street and South Bend Avenue is set to start on or after Wednesday.

Another project that would widen the roadway and add turn lanes on SR 23 and Main Street that was set to take place on May 25 has been delayed. Work, however, is set to begin in the following weeks, at least one lane on SR 23 is to remain open in each direction during this project.

Drivers will not be able to turn left on Main Street if going northeast on SR 23.

INDOT says that these projects are set to end near late August. Drivers are urged to follow traffic directions, expect delays, slow down, and drive distraction-free during all work zones.
