Multiple Michiana schools hold e-learning day due to bus driver shortage

Multiple schools in both Indiana and Michigan have announced closures for today, but it's not because of snow or bad weather.

Local schools say that absences in the transportation department have led to less buses being available, so only certain programs and classes will be held in person today.

All 3 districts say drivers being out sick is a big reason for the closures today, but a shortage of qualified bus drivers has also become a national issue.

A national survey from the American Public Transportation Association said 71% of transit agencies reported they had to cut or delay services this year because of staff shortages.

Today will be an e-learning day for Warsaw Community Schools if your child goes to Leesburg and Jefferson Elementary Schools, Lakeview Middle School and Warsaw community high school.

In Elkhart Community Schools, all ECS middle and high schools will have an e-learning day today.

All ECS elementary schools are open, as well as the Elkhart Area Career Center.

Transportation will be provided to elementary school students, but not for high schoolers attending the career center.

The intense intervention program and young adult program at North Side and Pierre Moran middle schools, Elkhart freshman division and Elkhart High School will still take place in person today, with transportation provided for students who usually ride the bus there.
