Nature walk turns water rescue
BERRIEN SPRINGS, Mich. -- What students from Andrews University thought would be just another day in their Animal Behavior class, ended up being one of their most eventful days yet.
The biology students were walking around Lake Shellenbarger when they spotted a deer that was stuck in the freezing lake.
The students say Professor Atkins did not think twice about saving the deer.
"He was like, 'So guys, who wants to help me?' And my hand just went right up," said Kayla Burt.
Andrews University student Jeremy Grant got everything on tape.
The video shows that at first the deer was trying to get away from the students, but eventually it surrendered to their aide.
Students had to act quickly. They pulled the deer into the canoe and then headed towards shore.
Before they could take the deer inside to get warmed up, it jumped up and ran off.
"I think that's when it really dawned on us, like we just rescued a deer from a lake," said Grant.
The students say that day changed their lives just as much as it changed the deer's.
