ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. – After four years of planning and construction, the new Elkhart Health and Aquatics Center is finally opening its doors.
The 171,000 square foot facility in the River District downtown cost about $59 million.
Phase one includes an Olympic size pool complex with plenty of space for spectators.
Beacon Health and Fitness will also offer a running track, gym, workout space, weights, yoga, Pilates, racquetball, and more.
The Community Foundation of Elkhart County helped raise much of the money to create a major attraction in the city.
“We estimate there will be 40,000 people a year that come here and use this facility from outside of Elkhart County and beyond," said Dr. Pete McCown, the president of the Community Foundation of Elkhart County. "For folks that are not members there will be programming from nutrition classes to Medicare enrollment classes to pickle ball to badminton leagues.”
The Health and Fitness center opens to the public on Thursday.
