New bites at the ballpark on opening day
COLUMBUS, Ohio.-- Researchers at Nationwide Children’s Hospital have found a new alternative to the traditional smoke alarm.
Their research shows that children can sleep through the high-pitched tone of a smoke alarm, for up to five minutes.
Alarms that incorporate a mother’s voice are found to be more effective.
"The fact that we were able to find an alarm sound that can awaken children more quickly and get them to escape from a bedroom in the case of a fire could save lives." Dr. Gary Smith, Nationwide Children’s Hospital
Experts suggest having a fire evacuation plan and practicing fire drills at home twice a year.
