New York man arrested for La Porte County home invasion

LA PORTE COUNTY, Ind. -- The La Porte County Sheriff's Office announced an arrest has been made regarding a reported home invasion on Aug. 9.
Forty-eight-year-old Matthew J. Mayer of Elmira, N.Y. was arrested and charged with Burglary – Resulting in Bodily Injury, a Level 3 Felony, Battery – Resulting in Moderate Bodily Injury, a Level 6 Felony, Residential Entry, a Level 6 Felony, and Strangulation, a Level 6 Felony.
Deputies say on Aug. 9, they responded to the 6000-west block of C.R. 400 North where they were informed a man, later identified as Mayer, had forced entry into a home and was attacking the homeowner, a 63-year-old woman.
Authorities arrived to find Mayer outside the residence, where he was taken into custody.
The victim told deputies she was inside her house when she saw a vehicle in her driveway.
Mayer is said to have then walked up to the front door before suddenly forcing it open.
Mayer then entered the home and allegedly began violently attacking the victim.
The report states several juveniles, who had been riding in the vehicle with Mayer, then entered the home and convinced him to stop the attack.
The victim sustained upper body injuries and was evaluated at the scene.
Mayer was taken to an area hospital for clearance.
A probable cause affidavit and charging information were prepared and was granted. A sealed arrest warrant was issued for Mayer.
Mayer was discharged Thursday and picked up by the Warrants Division.
Mayer was taken to the La Porte County Jail and is being held on a $25,005 cash-only bond through Super Court I.
Authorities' investigation determined there to be no connection between Mayer, the victim, or the residence.
