New 'zipper-style parking formation' implemented to free up tailgate spots

Finding the perfect spot to park in a sea of Irish fans can be difficult.

The folks at Notre Dame made a few changes this year to help.

"The time the lots open, from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m., park wherever they like. Those who want to keep the traditions going, they’ll have the opportunity,” said Les Niedbalski, manager of parking and traffic.

It’s open season for early birds.

But if you like to drag your feet, there’s a new parking formation that could help you find the perfect park.

“At 9 a.m. we will go into the zipper parking mode,” said Niedbalski.

So what does zipper parking mean?

The short of it, your cars will now have to file in.

No more free-for-all after 9 a.m.

“Fill in from north to south, which will make it more safer for all the fans here,” said Niedbalski.

It’s something the campus is trying to improve efficiency.
