Niles school board accepts resignation of superintendent

NILES, Mich. -- After its fifth closed door meeting in 3 weeks, the Niles school board disclosed the subject of these meetings. The school board has accepted the resignation of superintendent Richard Weigel.

Dr. Kevin Ivery will be stepping in as Interim Superintendent until the board hires a permanent replacement.

All this happened during Weigel's sick leave, he and the board evaluated several options on how best to move forward. The decision did not have anything to do with the sick leave.

Board President Kathy Zeider said they are grateful for everything Weigel has accomplished in his four years, but ultimately it all came down to a difference of opinions.

"Recently it became apparent that some members of administration and the board of education and Dr. Weigel have different views of leadership and vision for the future of the district," says Zeider.

The decision is effective immediately.

Weigel will remain as consultant to the district through June 30, 2014.
