No charges in Hemlock Road shooting

The St. Joseph County Police and Prosecutor's office have conferred and decided no charges will be filed in the shooting on Hemlock Road early Saturday morning. The man shot was assaulting an occupant of the house.

According to St. Joseph County Police, they were called to a residence in the 11300 block of Hemlock Road in eastern St. Joseph County for a shooting.

When police arrived, they learned 29-year-old Jessie Hanson had been shot.

Police had been to the home a few hours earlier when Ian Kowalski reported receiving a threat from Hanson via telephone.

During that investigation, Ian refused police assistance.

After police left, Hanson arrived at the home and attacked Ian.

Ian's uncle, Matt Kowalski, tried to get Hanson to stop.

Ian and Matt retreated to another room in the home, reports said.

Hanson allegedly forced his way into the room and assaulted Ian.

Police say that is when Matt retrieved a handgun and shot Hanson.

No charges will be filed in the case, according to police.
